In today’s world where there is politics, envy, greed, selfishness and jealousy, it’s very difficult to become a good leader. When the world is heading towards dark, it needs a good leader who will lead the people to light. When we look at the history, it's full of good leaders who fought hard without thinking about their life and the life of their near and dear ones, but instead they thought about the people around them and thought of the ways to bring people out of darkness and slavery.
In this blog we will look at the qualities of a good leader and how to become a good leader. The life they live, the way they think, the way they speak, the way they lead, the way they present themselves is different as compared to others. A person is born as a leader, it’s very true. But a person like you and me can also become a leader by leading our life in below possible ways :-
A] Sacrificing “self” from within :-
- A good leader never thinks about his own self, about his assets, his family, his health and wealth but instead he dedicates his life for others and thrives day and night to make their life better.
- It’s very difficult to get rid of this self feeling as we being human tend to be self centric and self obsessed. Whether one may agree with this statement or disagree but it's absolutely true.
- The first thing one should do to become a great leader is to eradicate the word “I”, “Me” and “My” word from their life.
- Because this will broaden our perspective and open up our mind and help us to look at every situation broadly and also will help us to think about the well being of others.
- After removing “self” from within, we tend to become humble as the scripture says in Proverbs 15:33, “The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honour”.
B] Hunger to learn more
- “Emptiness always brings fullness of life in us”. When we empty our self completely saying we know nothing or there is more scope to learn, we make way to grasp more knowledge.
- When a person thinks he is ought to be more knowledgeable than others this creates a feeling of fullness in him and blocks the path to learn more and grasp more knowledge.
- A feeling of fullness may also lead to pride and arrogance which in the end will always leads to destruction.
- Learning brings in innovation and knowledge enlightens us to come up with innovative ways to make other’s life worth living.
- In scripture, when we see at the life of many people of God, they always emptied themselves before God, so God was able to transfuse more and more knowledge and wisdom in them. They even gained favour and mercy of God.
C] Shares their Knowledge and experience
- It is said that sharing of the Knowledge brings an overflow of Knowledge and wisdom in us. Sharing increases the knowledge of the speaker and also the knowledge of the hearer.
- A Leader should carry great knowledge and wisdom with the ability to convey and transfer his knowledge. Knowledge so that he may be able to help his associates while wisdom to deal with the problems tactfully.
- A person who gains knowledge but does not share with his fellow associates, tend to become a Fallen Leader.
- As the scripture says in 1 Corinthians 12: 26, “If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts share it’s suffering. If one part is praised, all the others share in its happiness”, because if this team fails due to lack of Knowledge and wisdom, it’s the failure of the leader no matter how knowledgeable the leader is.
D] Encourages others
- Encouragement is something we all need to keep us motivated, loved, and feeling confident in ourselves and what we do. It’s something that is important for our mental and overall health and it truly gives us just the same amount of joy to give it to others as it is to receive it.
- As the scripture says in Romans 15:2, “Each of us should please his neighbour for his good, to build him up”. Here, neighbour symbolises all those who are around us.
- Encouragement gives us the spirit of unity. It binds everyone together and gives us the spirit to keep going through all ebbs and flows of their life.
E] Knows oneself
- We all know our strengths and weaknesses but there are very few who works on their weaknesses and makes their weakness as their strength.
- But a Leader knows his weaknesses and manage to work on his weaknesses. A Leader knows what are his flaws and how to overcome his flaws
F] Learns from his failure
- We, normally tend to give up on failures. We enjoy our success but we are not prepared to face the failure.
- But a Leader always prepares himself for the failure. He doesn’t get carried away by his success but instead makes himself ready for the second goal.
- If he fails in any of his goals, a Leader always finds alternate ways to reach to his goal.
- Instead of focusing on the problem, we need to search for the solution to cope up with the problem. But instead we emphasise more on the problem and beat around the problem instead of searching for an alternate way to get to that goal.
G] Keeps room for corrections
- A wise man is said to learn from his mistakes. He always accepts corrections and rebukes no matter how hard the way of correction is, he accepts the correction
- Before taking any decision, the leader always consults the council of wise.
- As written in Proverb 15:32, “He who neglects and ignores instruction and discipline despises himself, But he who learns from rebuke acquires understanding [and grows in wisdom]”
H] Being in the frontline with his fellow workers
- A leader always fights war by being a frontier with his fellow worker.
- No matter how hard the battle is, a leader will always lead his team by standing in the front line.
- During failure, the true leader comes in front and takes up the failure on himself, takes the whole criticism and blame on himself but during success, he puts the team ahead and let them take the success.
I] Thinks about the well being of others
- A true leader always thinks about his subordinates before thinking about his welfare like how he can improve the life of his subordinates
- He will always be a mentor and a guide for them.
J] Enlightens his fellow workers
- “What people will think if we will correct them ? “, “I will never be in this good books if I will correct him”, “He will feel bad, if I will tell him that it's wrong”, “I seriously don’t care whatever he do, let him do, let him suffer” - This is our response when it comes to correct others
- But a true leader will always correct the mistakes of his subordinates and will enlighten them by paving their path
- He will never try to be in anybodies good book but he will strive hard to correct others so that they may not suffer because of their wrong decision.
K] Visionary
- A true leader is someone who has positive ideas about the future.
- Being visionary is very important because a person with a vision always succeeds in his life because he never gives up as he knows his goals. Even though he fails, he will search for possible ways to reach to his goals which makes him victorious in life.
L] Live an exemplary life
- A good leader always lives an exemplary life, living his life as an example for others.
- The great leaders like A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Sir, Ratan Tata Sir, Krishna Murthy Sir, etc. have set themselves as an example to follow.
- I being a child grew up listening about Ratan Tata sir and Abdul Kalam sir, the way they led their life by touching the life of many.
- The scripture is also full of Leaders who have led Israelites into victory.
NOTE :-
1. It's easy to call ourself as a Leader, but to stand on it, is a bit difficult
2. To become a good Leader, we need to have courage, wisdom and sacrificial heart.
3. We will have to give what we have, to get what we want. Without sacrifice, there is no success
